Police in Kompong Cham province are searching for a rubber plantation guard who shot dead a 25-year-old plantation worker on Friday for allegedly stealing 10 kg of latex, authorities said. The lunch-time shooting of Muth Nol sparked outrage in Chamkar Leu district and hundreds of villagers carrying machetes and sticks protested at the Chamkar Andaung Rubber Plantation where they torched a guardhouse. "It was barbarous that the guard killed our poor worker for such a little thing," former plantation worker Tann Sithong said by telephone. The guard, known as Heng, allegedly shot Muth Nol dead when he failed to stop his motorcycle, which he was allegedly driving to market to sell the latex to get money to celebrate the Khmer New Year, district police Chief Um Leang Heang said. "This is a crazy situation when a guard would kill a poor worker for taking such a small amount of resin," Um Leang Heang said. Rubber plantation guards were ordered to hand over their rifles under the government's weapons reduction program, but they had negotiated a deal to retain around 10, Um Leang Heang added. May Khannin, an official at the Chamkar Andaung Plantation, declined to comment.
