More than 100 fishermen from Kompong Thom province took their protest to Phnom Penh on Monday and gathered at the National Assembly to demand the release of 14 colleagues who were jailed last week for allegedly fishing in a privately-owned lot on a tributary of the Tonle Sap. Around 140 fishermen staged a protest outside Kompong Thom provincial court on Friday afternoon demanding the release of the jailed 14, who were arrested by police on May 2 and 3 and charged with robbery. "I want to appeal to Samdech Hun Sen to have our people released from jail. They are innocent. And we want him to allow us to fish in our river," said Chuon Chan, 39, one of the protesters at the Assembly. Vorn Vuth, 35, said the villagers used the river to survive. "We need water to fish for survival, otherwise our families will have nothing to eat," he said. Kompong Thom Provincial Governor Nam Tum said that the status of the river, whether it is public property or belongs to an individual, is currently in limbo and that he has sent officials to inspect the conflicting claims to the Song district waterway. The future of the 14 people arrested was an issue for the courts, he added. Kompong Thom Provincial Court Director Touch Sakhoeun said the 14 will stay in prison until their trial.
