PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA: Cambodian lawmakers voted on Friday to eliminate prison sentences for defamation, making the offense punishable only by fines.
Of the 87 lawmakers who attended a National Assembly session Friday, 81 voted in support of the amendment proposed by the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen last month.
The vote marked a concrete result of a promise Hun Sen made after he backed down from a series of criminal defamation lawsuits against government critics early this year.
