A Sydney man has been arrested over an alleged attempt to smuggle drugs into Australia hidden inside bottles of pickled fish fillets.
Customs Service officials said today the man, aged 32, was arrested at Adelaide International Airport yesterday after arriving on a flight from Cambodia which came through Singapore.
"Customs officers became suspicious about pickled fish fillets inside jars found in the passenger's luggage," Customs officials said.
"Closer inspection revealed a number of condoms sewn inside the fish pieces."
Australian Federal Police (AFP) forensic officers examined the fish and removed 39 condoms containing more than two kg of a substance they suspect to be heroin.
Further testing of the drugs was still being conducted, the AFP said.
The arrested man was charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug and was expected to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court.
