Ho Chi Minh City (Prey Nokor) is coming under increasing risk of foot-and-mouth disease with sick animals continued to be transported into the city, the city’s top animal health official warned Wednesday.
At a meeting held by the city people’s committee to discuss prevention and combat measures, the animal health department said 454 sick cattle and pigs had been discovered at slaughter houses this year.
The number amounted to much more than had been discovered in the previous three years up to 2005.
Huynh Huu Loi, head of the health animal department, said cattle and pigs with foot-and-mouth continued to arrive at abattoirs which meant people were at risk.
A health expert said animals infected with the disease could still produce normal-looking meat and warned people to eat well-done meat to prevent any possible transmission of the virus from sick animals.
The disease is spreading rapidly and has affected central and southern provinces bordering Laos and Cambodia and also northern provinces near China.
Over 11,000 cattle and 15,000 pigs in 33 provinces have so far been reported of being infected with the disease.
