Hun Sen wants to get true report from U.N. envoy

(Kyodo) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen told the United Nations' top human rights official on Thursday that he wants to receive a true report of his government's functioning, according to his spokesman.

"The government does not want to get admiration on its work, but wants the human rights groups to tell the truth and facts and avoid for just viewing Cambodia as a hell," Eang Sophalette quoted Hun Sen as saying during his talks with U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour.

Hun Sen was outraged by remarks made by the U.N. special human rights envoy to Cambodia, Yash Ghai, during a visit in March. Ghai said that too much power was concentrated in the hands of one man, referring to Hun Sen.

"If the prime minister has no power, how can he run the country?" Hun Sen was quoted as saying in the talks on Thursday.

Arbour, however, said nothing to reporters after the meeting, but Sophalette said she realized progress has been made in human rights.

Arbour is scheduled to hold a press conference on Friday before concluding her five-day visit.

The UN Human Rights envoy who made his assessment on Cambodia last few months is a fair and acceptable to all the people. Because he based his assessment on the imput from many NGOs and from his own observation. His remark on the human rights in Cambodia is just a reminder to our government to work harder on this field in order to improve our living condition. The UN should not make any change from its previous statement prepaired by Mr. Gai.
