Education International, a union claiming to represent more than 29 million teachers and education workers, has urged Prime Minister Hun Sen to uphold freedom of expression after riot police prevented unionists from marching for Labor Day Monday. "EI and other member organizations in Europe ... have raised concerns about your government's treatment of trade unionists," EI General Secretary Fred van Leeuwen wrote to Hun Sen Tuesday. "We again urge your government to uphold freedom of expression and trade union rights as fundamental principles of democracy in Cambodia." The Cambodian Independent Teachers' Association is an EI affiliate. Information Minister and government spokesman Khieu Kanharith could not be reached for comment.
