Cambodia, Malaysia to strengthen bilateral cooperation

Cambodia and Malaysia on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral relations through the expansion of various areas of cooperation for the mutual benefits.

Cambodia and Malaysia made their reaffirmation at the second meeting of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation held in Cambodia's tourism city of Siem Reap from Monday to Tuesday.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and his Malaysian counterpart Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar led their delegations attending the meeting.

During the meeting, they discussed a wide range of bilateral issues of mutual interest including security, trade, investment, tourism, agriculture, transportation and technical cooperation, according to a joint statement.

Both sides said that they will continue to discuss and identify possible areas of collaboration on security as well as on the issues of illegal migration and transnational crime and on the Cambodian proposal to sign an memorandum of understanding on the trafficking of women and children.

On agriculture, the two countries agreed to enhance cooperation through trading activities, exchange of information and human resource development.

They also discussed the provision by Malaysia of used railway tracks for the construction of the missing link between Poipet and Sisophon, as part of the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link (SKRL) as well as on increasing air services between Malaysia and Cambodia.

They decided that the third meeting of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation would be held in Malaysia in the year 2008.
