PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Cambodia and Vietnam will begin demarcating their contentious border in September in a bid to end a decades-old territorial dispute left over from French colonial times.
The two nations will set up 350 poles along the border stretching 1,270 kilometers (787 miles), said Var Kim Hong, chairman of Cambodia's border committee. They have agreed to finish the demarcation before the end of 2008.
"It is not an easy process to complete. But we will be happy if we finish this on time because the territorial problem will be solved," said Var Kim Hong.
Cambodia and Vietnam inked a controversial deal in October resolving six of seven border disputes with Vietnam and called for marking the border by December 2008.
Opponents of the deal complain it cedes too much land to Vietnam, but Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has flatly denied their arguments and launched a crackdown on his critics.
Nearly a dozen government critics, including human rights leader Kem Sokha, were either jailed or faced punishment under criminal defamation laws that rights groups and diplomats said were being used by Hun Sen to silence dissent.
But they were released on bail earlier this year and later Hun Sen asked courts to drop all defamation charges against them.
Border feuds tap into an often virulent anti-Vietnamese sentiment in Cambodia, fuelled by resentment of Vietnam's expansion over the centuries.
Their border left over from French colonial times remains vague as stone markers and boundary flags have disappeared, while trees lining it have been cut down.

With the modern technology in the world including the Global Positional System(GPS) can be used to verify and map out every square inch of Cambodian land but AH HUN SEN is resorting to the use the word of mouth and his fucken 1985 treaty with the Vietcong!
AH HUN SEN can honor anything in the world with the Vietcong but Cambodian people would never honor anything will the Vietcong!
These days the Vietcong is in a hurry to put border markers at their expense in the million and they want to finish putting all the borders markers before 2008! So what is the hurry? Cambodian can wait another 10! If Cambodian can wait for another 10 years to use the 3G video phone and why not!
AH HUN SEN will leave a legacy for his son and daughter as the children of a traitor! They will be marked and remembered and Cambodian society must not allow them to grow to no more than a slave of the Vietcong! AH HUN SEN don't need to dream that one day his sons and daugthers will take his place and sign more treaty with the Vietcong to take more Cambodian land!
What AH HUN SEN can do and Cambodian people can undo! AH HUN SEN is not God almighty! I said get the firing squad ready and begin the hunting for all these traitors!
"With the modern technology in the world including the Global Positional System(GPS) can be used to verify and map out every square inch of Cambodian land..."
Now I hate the one-eyed traitor more. Even with the modern surveying equipment, the traitor still does not use it to varify every square inch in dispute with Ah Yiekong cak cak. Hahaha.
Now, Hun Sen gives Khmer land to Youn in a legal way. Fuck!!!!!!!
The Vietcong will never find peace.
What the Vietcong are doing right now is very illegal by international standard. The Vietcong is in such a hurry to put these border markers before the end of 2008 because HUN SEN has no use for the Vietcong.
The most embarrassing for all Cambodian people is that Cambodian officials under HUN SEN will stand there do nothing while watching the Vietcong place the border markers anywhere they are please!
The only to get even with these Vietcong is help the Khmer Krom free from Vietcong domination once and for all! It doesn't matter how much it will cost Cambodia economically or politically.
These Vietcong must not allow to be dictated over Cambodian people! The Vietcong aggression must be stop!
Hi 1:19 PM,
Your idea is just like my idea, we can do by this way, however it costs alot. But just wait for a moment, time is not over, some of our politiciens have kept the way for us, don't forget Sam rainsy party doesn't reconigned the treaty, so it means that the border treaty can be reclaim it again whenever CPP collapes.
I still have a hope, one day we will get khmer krom land back and VN will suffer just like we have in the past.
According to lord buddha, nothing can stay forever, it will be changed, just soon or later. I hope to see it in my lifetime, when those time arrives, or i am the one who do it. I am voleentir to do so.
