A senior official from the secretariat of Funcinpec said that the refusal by the former monarch, King-Father Norodom Sihanouk, to a recent request for an audience by Funcinpec party members is normal because King-Father is tired, especially after he just returned from overseas.
Nouv Sivotharo, the spokesman of Funcinpec secretariat office, denied the publication made by a number of local newspapers claiming that King-Father’s refused because he does not want to listen to the report of the internal problems in this party which is currently being fought by two groups.
Nouv Sivotharo said: “H.E. the secretary-general [Nhiel Bun Chhay] wanted to meet [King-Father] as kaun-chao (his children)… [King-Father] returned from China and [Nhiek Bun Chhay] misses him and wants to meet him … King-Father is tired, he said he wanted to rest for a while. Furthermore, if King-Father receives one delegation, he has to receive other delegations as well … he said sorry to the Funcinpec delegation… There is no declining as reported by some newspapers.”
On 12 June, King-Father Norodom Sihanouk had declined the request for an audience by a delegation of 10 Funcinpec party members led by the party’s secretary-general, Nhiek Bun Chhay. King-Father explained by saying that if he were to allow the audience to Nhiek Bun Chhay, he also has to hold audience for other important national and international officials also.
