The Free Trade Union of Woirkers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC) is maintaining its strike notice for 03 July if the increase of minimum salary of workers from $45 to $80 will not take place. [Union] leaders had announced in a press release which was distributed this weekend in response to speeches given by Cham Prasidh, minister of commerce, and Van Sou Ieng, president of the Association of textile industries of Cambodia, who affirmed that most of the strikes would be illegal and would scare foreign buyers. FTUWKC leaders responded that if the number of strikes and demonstrations has increased, it is due to the work code violations committed by the employers. According to the union leaders, affirming that the demonstrations would cause the closures of factories is a false excuse.

“The unionists said that the factory bankruptcies or the absence of investors in the country are first of all linked to the bureaucracy and corruption,” the statement issued by the union indicated. “The government must demand to the employers to respect the work law. If the employers were to do so, the strikes and demonstrations would have been less numerous.”

Furthermore, the ministry of work had issued a statement announcing the meeting of work council committee next month including the government, the employers, the workers, and the unions. “The strike is a right, but it does not bring any benefit. The best solution is to come to the table for negotiation,” Vong Soth, the minister of work, proposes.
