PM Warns Police, Soldiers Over Weapons

Prime Minister Hun Sen has warned government officials not to allow their children to use their government-issued weapons and called on police officers, soldiers and military police to stop carrying guns into restaurants and beer gardens.

At a surplus weapons destruction ceremony in Kandal province on Tuesday, Hun Sen told officials to be strict about the storage of their weapons.

"So far, there were some children and nephews of high-ranking members of the government who have threatened and shot people," Hun Sen said in a speech.

Of armed officers in entertainment spots, Hun Sen said: "They don't need to bring their weapons along with than."

Members of the police and military shot four female beer-promotion and karaoke parlor workers in separate incidents between February and April. None of the perpetrators were prosecuted.

On Monday evening, a member of the Interior Ministry's bodyguard unit fired into the air at a Phnom Penh beer garden after the owner refused to sit and drink with him.

Interior Ministry Bodyguard Department Chief Suon Chheangly said that the officer, Bou Vannarith, was drunk and has been suspended from work for three months as punishment.

Kek Galabru, president of local rights group Licadho, said she doubted that authorities would follow Hun Sen's call.

"I support [Hun Sen's] statement, but I would really like to see the implementation of what he says," she said.

"Many times I have heard the leader say this, but we still see accidents happen," Kek Galabru added.

In a short-lived initiative in 2001, the prime minister issued a directive to shut down all nightclubs, discos and karaoke parlors in Cambodia because of violence and drug taking at such establishments.

Hun Sen's own nephew, Nhim Sophea, was charged with manslaughter after a car crash in October 2003 that killed one man and was followed by the shooting of two innocent passers-by. Nhim Sophea was cleared of the charge in December 2004.

These gangsters were born from animal sperm in their mother wom. Therefore they ack just like animals. I have never seen any animal worst than these animal who are children of so-called high ranking officials. If they are really children of high ranking officials from a real sperm, they wouldn't act like wild animal.
