Reaksmei Kampuchea
Translated from Khmer
"Prince Sisowath Thomiko on 8 June made known his intention of gathering a number of dignitaries to form a Sihanoukist party; however, some political analysts and diplomats saw the possible success of the party to be formed petty." This is according to a report by Konthea carried by the pro-government Cambodian daily newspaper Phnom Penh Reaksmei Kampuchea in its 9 June edition.
In a telephone interview by Reaksmei Kampuchea on 8 June, the report said, Prince Sisowath Thomiko, ex-secretary of former King Norodom Sihanouk, mentioned, "I have the intention of playing politics. If I play politics, I have a clear-cut condition; that is, it is Sihanoukist." The prince, who used to make a lot of criticism of the government, added, "I will consult with a number of dignitaries, and if they agree with the Sihanoukist principles," he would join them to form the political party.
So far, the report added, Prince Thomiko had already held discussions with some important persons, and he said that he would also consult with some others about the "possibilities of establishing the Sihanoukist party."
The dignitaries that the prince looked at, the report said, were Koem Sokha, Khoem Veasna, and Kan Vireak.
Prince Thomiko further said that creating "separate parties was not advantageous," the report added. And disclosing the motive that led him to have such thinking, he said it was because he saw "growing serious rift in every party." As such, he intended to gather the patriots and inspire them to become interested in this issue." However, the prince did "not reveal the exact name for the new party." He only said that it depended on the "majority of opinions" and that he, too, was entitled to present a name. He pointed out that he would "not create a political party on his own." Therefore, it was wrong to understand that he "intended to create a party by himself," the report further said.
Khoem Veasna, a former MP of the Sam Rainsy Party, who was in the process of applying for authorization to create the "Alliance for Democracy Party," mentioned on 8 June that, the report said, it was a "good idea to unite, but we should first conduct a study to look at the objective and procedures. If there is an agreement, there will be no problem to do so."
However, Khoem Veasna explained that he did not want to gather forces to criticize any other parties and that the use of former King Sihanouk's name was a "dishonest" action, the report added. Khoem Veasna added, "If the king father [Sihanouk] took part, it would not matter, but if he did not participate, we should not use his name."
As for Cambodian Human Rights Center President Koem Sokha, the report said, he told Reaksmei Kampuchea that he continued to maintain his position. In other words, he thought that doing the civil society work was "more useful." So far, he added, he had "not yet decided to play politics" and that he "never met with or knew Prince Thomiko;" he only heard of his name on radio.
A political analyst said on 8 June that it might be "very hard" to gather eminent personalities to form the political party if the comments by the two dignitaries mentioned by Prince Thomiko were taken into consideration, the report said. The analyst regarded the idea to create the political party a "wrong political decision," saying this party "might not succeed in the election despite its efforts to make use of former King Sihanouk's name." He explained that although the ex-king was still popular among the aged voters, the youngsters of later generations would make their decisions "based on concrete solutions to social problems rather than on love or hate."
Moreover, a foreign diplomat who asked to remain anonymous explained that, the report said, the existence of many political parties was "not a good sign for political stability, but a political division." He added that the "good option was that they should join forces and that two or three political parties that could be kept in equilibrium in political decision-making was more than enough," the Reaksmei Kampuchea report concluded.
