Prime Minister Hun Sen's adviser Om Yentieng warned on Monday that a strike scheduled for July 3 by teacher and labor unions will not help their economic plight, as the government is not in a position to raise salaries. The Cambodian Independent Teachers' Association and the Free Trade Union, which claim to have a combined membership of about 78,000 workers, said last week that they plan to strike. Om Yentieng joked that both he and Hun Sen want to raise teachers' salaries to $20,000 per month, but said the government can only make small increases each year. He also said that the government could not force garment factory owners to increase the amount of money they pay their workers. "The strike will cause the teachers and workers to face more economic difficulties," he said. CITA President Rong Chhun, who wants teachers' salaries raised from an average of $25 per month to $100, said he believed the government had the money to raise teachers' salaries. Rong Chhun accused the government of choosing not to raise civil servants' incomes because it is easier to buy the votes of poor people.
