SRALANH KHMER

STATEMENT

The Sralanh Khmer Newspaper strongly condemns the death threat anonymously sent to Mr. You Saravuth, the Editor of Sralanh Khmer Newspaper, on 21 June 2006 at 4:36 PM.

On 15 June 2006, the Sralanh Khmer Newspaper, in its 137th edition (2nd year of publication), published an article on its front page titled “It was heard that the son of Hun Neng and Kun Kim are ceasing thousands of hectares of lands belonging to the people and the State in the province of Mondolkiri.” The above article exposed the illegal land grabbing of lands belonging to the state and the people by the nephew of Prime Minister Hun Sen (the son of Mr. Hun Neng) and by Mr. Kun Kim, a confidant of Mr. Hun Sen in the Northeast region. On 19 June 2006, four days after the publication of this article, Oknha Hun To phoned Mr. You Saravuth’s phone number 012-888-550 to discuss the issues involved in the article mentioned above. Under Oknha Hun To’s insistence, Mr. You Saravuth decided to meet the Oknha (Hun To) at his home located in the neighborhood of Bokor, he was accompanied by a colleague, Kin Virak from the Sralanh Khmer Newspaper. The Sralanh Khmer Editor told Oknha (Hun To) that he is willing to print a correction on the upcoming edition of the newspaper if Oknha (Hun To) does not agree with the article mentioned above. However, Oknha Hun To turned around and threatened by saying: “If [I was to] meet the Editor of the Sralanh Khmer newspaper, we will truly know what’s going to happen.” Later, on 21 June 2006, at 4:36 PM, Sralanh Khmer received an anonymous fax sent from [fax] number 023-987-275 bearing the header “From: GALAXY WEB3”. The fax included an identification issued by the Royal Group of Company in which the picture of Mr. You Saravuth’s picture was crossed out, and it was accompanied by 3 skull-and-crossbones pictures at the bottom.

Sralanh Khmer Newspaper is requesting all levels of authorities to help protect the life of Editor You Saravuth, as well as investigating to find out the identity of the culprits and their accomplices who are threatening the life of Editor You Saravuth and bring them to justice.

Yes Ok now Hun To, but you don't forget that what will happen when your uncle lost his power. I think your families and you will have no land in Cambodia. When you lived in Kampong Cham province you were so strong than Moeun Nguon in Tum Teav. No body know what happen tomorrow, " l'home est mortel"
