Hanoi (dpa) - Vietnam carried out the death sentences of five men accused of running a heroin ring, a court official said Thursday.
"The firing squad of the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City executed five drug traffickers early Wednesday morning," according to the court's chief judge, Nguyen Duc Sau.
The men had been found guilty of running a drug trafficking ring that operated between Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, which are part of what is known as the Golden Triangle.
They were convicted last January of bringing 823 kilograms of heroin into Vietnam between 2002 and 2003.
In Vietnam, those caught with 100 grams of heroin or 5 kilograms of opium are subject to the death penalty.
At least 21 people have faced a firing squad in Vietnam so far this year. Most have been charged with drug trafficking.
