Washington deepens defense ties with Hanoi

Asia Security Monitor No. 165, June 21, 2006
American Foreign Policy Council, Washington, DC
Editor: Joshua Eisenman

In the wake of the annual "Shangri-La" security dialogue in Singapore, the Pentagon is deepening defense ties with both Vietnam and Indonesia. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has met in Hanoi with Vietnam's Prime Minister, Phan Van Khai, and in Jakarta with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to discuss bolstering security cooperation. As part of the outreach, the Defense Department has agreed to provide military training for Vietnamese forces, and allow Vietnamese officers to visit U.S. bases. Hanoi, in turn, will permit sophisticated U.S. underwater sensors to aid maritime searches and host a U.S. Navy destroyer next month, the fourth U.S. naval port call in four years, the Los Angeles Times reports.

United States goodwill toward the Vietname is a way to contain China growing military power!

I 'm sorry..I meant you probably right.

I pray for changes everyday and sometimes I wonder how could a governemnt that has zero concept of who we really are, able to do anything different?

I have very little hope, if any at all under the current leadership.

Well, obviously China is a treat to America, just like communism was its treat earlier. China will be an economic superpower, militarily is unclear, however; China is busy modernizing its military by doing a lot of purchasing of Russia's latest weapons. Russia is becoming more and more anti-democracy and anti-American. So we can say that those two guys are buddies because they have common enemy.

American is picking its stragetic locations. It has South Korea, Japan, Tawain, and now Vietnam. If hell broke loose (war between China and America that is), China will attempt to annihilate Taiwan and Vietnam and Russia will be involved. If that will be the case, Vietnam might again attack Cambodia since Cambodia is China's friends. China has been working hard to win the heart and mind of the people of Cambodia (not to mention Laos) through donations and we should know why.

I think Cambodia should strengthen its ties with China if it wishes to be shield by the invading Vietnamese troops. With the help from China, who knows, Cambodia might regain back some of the territories when the right opportunity. America has proven to be unreliable of stopping communis. America is not too interest in Cambodia for its political or economic benefits, therefore will show little concern in Cambodia's affair.
