Phnom Penh, Cambodia (AHN) - Cambodian government might have allowed the native damsels to compete for their beauty at Miss Cambodia Contest, provided that wear proper attire. The government has banned the beauties to wear swimming suits during the contest to "preserve Cambodian culture."
The country, which is holding its first Miss Cambodia competition after more than a decade, has ruled out skimpy attire in contests, organizers said Friday.
Sim Sarak, a director-general of Cambodia's Culture Ministry said that contestants of the beauty pageant starting September must be properly attired at all times "to preserve Cambodian culture."
As a condition of holding the event, the government said contestants cannot take to the stage in swimsuits.
The final of the contest will be held in December, said Kem Tola, marketing manager for Planet Communication Ltd., a Cambodian events management company.
The winner will receive a $969 prize and will likely be nominated to take part in next year's Miss Universe contest, Tola said. Because of the swimsuit ban at home, Miss Cambodia may need to learn how to pose in a swimsuit before going abroad, he said.
Miss Cambodia competitions were held in 1993 and 1995, but not in the intervening period, because the government thought it was a waste of money, Sim Sarak said. Swimsuits were also banned from the earlier contests, he added.
Cambodia is predominantly Buddhist and socially conservative country.

Why be so ashame of the human body? God created human body to be admired and to be loved! If the human body is so evil and so sinful and why would God created it for? I personally don't think pornography is evil either!
Remember when I said the human body is to admired and to be loved mean that you must respect your body like a place of worship(temple or church). Those people who go around throw their body into sex or risky behavior mean they disrespect their body and oneself and soon will die of sexual transmit diseases someday!
Hun Sen Government bans swimsuits in Beauty Pageant but Hun Sen legalizes human trafficking for sex slaves (girls as young as 8 years old).
Ah Kbal Tuol Maek Choeung Troh Daey!
Ah Nis Ches Hous!
Wow! How I love an intelligent and informed audience - A bi-polar masturbator, and a legislative fabricator.
Khmer culture??? Start looking at Apsaras at bas reliefs at Angkor. You will see how Khmer those women were.
May be Ranni has nothing good for the blind eye to see that's why.
To 6:44PM
You never see a naked woman before?
I think you are a fucken liar!
Honestly, Cambodians must be fair to Cambodian women.
Cambodian women have also swimsuit. Cambodian traditional swimsuit for ladies are "Sarongs". All ladies wear Sarong while taking bath or go to the beach.
Nothing wrong to wear "Sarong". It does not show the whole leg or the stomach and it's also our traditional ladies swimsuit. Cambodian girls wearing Sarong look pretty and also will show the beauty of our tradition.
The government should reconsider its decision and be proud of our traditional swimsuit.
If there is no swimsuit competition, people might think waht Cambodian ladies wear when they go to the beach or go to take shower. Do they go in the water at the beach with their regular working clothes or go naked.
Think about that.
Be proud of our tradition especially Cambodian Women tradition.
Don't think that we are always bad and block it.
As Cambodian, It's ashamed that we cannot show our Cambodian traditional swimsuit.
Look at Hawaiian Sarong, it look pretty. How about Cambodian Sarong? Can we show the world our rich tradition.
Have you?
Your mother must own a brothel, that how you start a sentence with such word. That shows your brothel subcultural mannerism.
ahahahah! What the hell is this?
Khmeng Watt Lankaa? Please all Buddhists must refrain from talking about swimsuit issue!
In case you didn't know Khmeng Watt Lankaa, Cambodia had become the number one place for human trafficking for sex and slave labors!
Undemocracy. bull
But Hun neng brothel is allowed.
Ms.Cambodia has her chance to compete for Ms.Universe's title just like every other nation on this earth. How can she achieve that goal or able to touch the sky the way she wanted to? or if we are not allowing her to wear an international swimwear( or swimsuit)?
She needs to be able to measure up to the international standard. Don't hold her back. Sure, Khmer's wear (Sarong)should be a difinite possible way and do provide some creative way to make our young beautiful Khmer women even more beautiful. That is KI.
An example for Srey Khmer Swimwear:
Think of something very soft, very light and solid color for sarong instead of a traditional flowers one.
Adding a carrying Khorm or a clay-carrying water pot would be a definite Khmer daughter.
Picture Phka Campei Or Champei flower on the side of her forehead near her ear. Do you see Khmer Daughter?
Please play with your imagination, be creative producers and make Khmer daughters the most incredible women in the world!
Don't forget to picture the new " neang Desavet" or Desavet of 2007. What would make her looking better today,if she is still be young and attractive?
Do we remember how beautiful she was when she played a role of a wealthy Khmer's daughter? and opposit of Krapeau Charavan? Neang Desavet and several of other young women were at the beach discovering an egg of a crocodile. Oh Holy Smoke! She was my dream Khmer woman and Goddess!!!.
Do dress our young cambodian Daughter in a good taste. There is nothing wrong with good taste. Teach everyone good moral rule!
We need to pay attention to our apprearance. Don't just hide them in a sloopy clothes and dress sloopy and think it's a way better way or clean from dirty sexual image. It's all up in our head.
Think of good good taste!, wear good clothing and do it with a style the best we can.Install a full lenght mirrior in our home and check for our better appearance everyday!
Look do count! That is because we are human! I'm not voting for a polician that look sloopy or never shower. Would you?
Bravo...I have never thought that KI readers talked about swimming suits.
OK, cut it out people. You want Khmer woman to be in it or not? simple as that. Don't want to wear swimsuit? fine...Just stay in that closet. I think Khmer women are so beautiful and they need to come out and show the world that we have beautiful people too. Drop the stupid Sarrong, Krom/POT what ever you call it that are parts of Khmer tradition at home. This is international competion and to compete for Miss Universe, she should be able to come out wearing a swimsuit with confident. After all woman are becautiful with the shape of their body and are meant to show and not hidding with stupid sarrong. That sarrong need to stay at home or wear to temple but not in Miss Universe competion. If we keep on debating over this matter, the whole world are walking way ahead of us, like Thai, China and Youn, Japan for example... Why are we so behind why are we so shy/ashame and by cautious????? There is need to conceal that beautiful body by wearing sarrong, instead we should encourage and promoe swimsuit to Khmer women, then they would continue to be aware of their body and will continue to promote a healty lifestyle. otherwise, they don't care to excercise to keep their body in shape if they wear sarrong all the times even at the beach. Their face maybe beautiful but their body is all meaty and fats.. that is ugly... that's definitely be a big turn off and no no to Miss Universe.
Our lawmakers are turning Cambodia into such a conservative country.conservatism will breed extreme ideaology.Next thing we know,Cambodia is again reduce to year zero like wat happen during the khmer rough regime. Those people better learn how to integrate us into the globalised world.
We are khmer and we all should honour our culture and respect for one another. We must strengthen value individual as as the most precious spirit of the land. Competing in the miss unverse pagent or standing as the political candidate, we must accept and protect the wisdom that the individual that in the future would bring so much good fortune to our home land.Competing in the miss universe pagent must allow our young woman to wear swim suit beauase it is international standard and if lucky enough she will bring back the crown for our women it would bring so much honour to our people and the land and she would be our greatest abassador to the world. We all looking forward to the change of heart that our leader all is allow our lady to have face in the international stage and be able shine and reach her potential.
Be united and remember how great our ancestor and how proude we are as the Khmer Kingdom. I wish all the girl that competing the the title miss universe good luck to all of them. Hoping Cambodian girl is one of them, Who ever respesent their country or the world in the respect and intelligent of her ability should win. Good luck to all.
