A representative of one of the largest oil companies in China met with Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday to discuss oil exploration in Cambodia, officials said. Chinese National Offshore Oil Company executive Yao Pin Li also met with National Petroleum Authority Chairman and Cabinet Minister Sok An, said Eang Sophalleth, assistant to the prime minister. Men Den, director of exploration at NPA said that CNOOC is looking at oil reserves in offshore blocks other than Block A which is being explored by US-based Chevron. Adjacent Block B has already been conceded to Thailand-based PTTEP. Men Den added that in December, the authority granted South Korean-based Suo Ching Industry permission to search for oil and gas in Pursat province. He said they have not yet started looking and that the agreement will therefore soon expire. State-owned CNOOC is the third largest petroleum company in mainland China after the China National Petroleum Corp and Sinopec. Last year CNOOC made a $18.5 billion offer to buy US-based Unocal, but the bid was resisted by the US government, and Chevron eventually purchased Unocal.
