New York Times

Chamnan Lim, a daughter of Lone Srey of Silver Spring, Md., and the late Lim Ho, was married at her mother's house on Friday evening to Sophal Ear, a son of Cam Youk Lim of Fremont, Calif., and the late Ear Muy Cuong. The Rev. Elaine S. Banks, an American Baptist minister, officiated at the nondenominational ceremony. Yesterday, Ponlork Le, a member of the board of the Cambodian Buddhist Society in Maryland, led a traditional Cambodian wedding ceremony, also at the home of the bride's mother.

Mrs. Ear, 31, is a policy adviser to the United Nations Development Program on aid coordination for Cambodia; she works in Phnom Penh. She graduated from Frostburg State University in Maryland, and received an M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins University. Her mother retired as a seamstress and a housekeeper at the J W Marriott Hotel in Washington. The bride's father was a medical paraprofessional in Neak Ta, Cambodia.

Dr. Ear, also 31, received a Ph.D. in political science in May from the University of California, Berkeley, from which he graduated and also received master's degrees in agricultural resource economics and in political science. He also holds a master's degree in public affairs from Princeton.

Next month the bridegroom is to begin a postdoctoral fellowship in public policy and administration at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. His mother retired as a seamstress at Elegance Embroidery, which was in Oakland, Calif. His father owned the Dépôt de Pharmacie Angkor, a drugstore in Phnom Penh.

Wow...congrats to the highly educated Cambodian couple. What is interesting to note is that the mothers of both the groom and bride used to work as SEAMSTRESSES. My own dearest late mother was also a seamstress. While it is not safe to generalize by just one person, I think most Cambodian first generation immigrants started out in the sweat shops.

Most Cambodian that came to America are refugees. They had nothing except a few sets of cloth. A few decades later, some are doing very well because they believed in themselves and took advantage of the American dreams. This should be every Cambodian/American's attitude. There should be more successful Cambodian/Americans in America. Other Southeast Asian are doing a lot better than Cambodian.

It's alright! If other Southeast Asian nation are doing a lot better than us.

I'm just glad that you two made it.
I'm very very happy and pretty optimistic about our future. Congratulation!!!

Many Cambodian had suffered mental illness from the Khmere Rouge's Era and had not been so lucky. My thoughts and prayers go to them as well. Again I'm very evry proud of you both! and please continue to lighting up the world kids!!!

Correction! you said many cambodian suffered mental illness, it is misleading. what's a mental illness? Crazy?

If you live under a dictator, you just get crazy? Im laughing very hard. What an insertion you have done.

Are you Khmer or what?

Mental illness doesn't mean crazy.
I think he meant metal disorder. Maybe you were born abroad that's why you never know how fearful khmer was!.

Ok, a great congratulation from Phnom Penh to a new couple and don't forget to come help restore Cambodia.

I don't know where you are,but I'm Khmer and khmer family that are knowing some of our poeple that are mentally ill. You can say that they are crazy and they are,if not control by medication.

Those that cann't fuction properly, cann't think right and cann't even read or write, because they are ill in the head. I'm sure you haven't seen thought that are always acting frightful and terrifying and wanting to kill someonebody for no reason.
Those are our Khmer poeple that used to leave next door to some of our unfortunate poeple that had been slaughtered and butchered during KR's time. Even when they are able to go to live abroad, they have to take medication just to stay calm and be normal for a little while. Didn't think that they exist, right? Look around Kids...and please pray for their wellness someday..

I think the word that best describe many Khmer of the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge is PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAMATIZED. We seem to be afraid of taking steps to achieve sucess because of fearful of consecquences or punishment. I think this play a big influence in many decision making of many Cambodian. Prior to Khmer Rouge, Cambodia was one of the most, if not the most, developing country in Southeast Asia, so that said something about the psychology of sucess Khmer during that time.

Let's not use the excuse Khmer Rouge as a reason of not so sucessful of many Cambodian. We should realize that we are as human being as any race or ethnicity, if they can do it, why can't we? If all of us keep this in mind, larger percentage of Cambodian will be sucessful. It has very little to do with brain alone.

Please explain it has very little to do with brain alone.

Don't get me wrong. We are human just like any body else. We are special in our own unique way. What they can do,we are more likely can do it to. It might not be excatly the same, because we have diffrent talent, but I thought only a normal brain of a man can do all that.. There is absolutely no excuse for a normal Cambodian not being able to be sucessful and smart.

My point is: while our heads are in the cloud "9" and proud of our sucess, we all should not forget our unfurtunate brothers and sisters and don't look down on them! They are all part of us.
We praise the best and the sucessful. We also love and care for those that are not so perfect. Does the word compasionate and thought for the less unfortunate ring the bell anyone?

Proud to be KI reader!

Anonymous 8:57PM, what I meant by " It has very little to do with brain alone" is that sucess comes with not just brain-smart alone but also requires the fundamental characteristics and traits of a go-getter, dreamer, and achiever mentality. Then again, how much acheivement is consider to be sucessful, a Ph.D, a Doctorate Degree, a Bachelor Degree, an Associate Degree, or a Certificate? Academically speaking that is.

I have a P.H.D.. physically Handicap and Disable!. How can I help Cambodia?

There are many ways you can help Cambodia, my friend. You do not have to have Ph.D. to help them. Mostly, you need the Heart and Money. You will be adored by the Cambodians if you have these two means. Remember in the KI they posted a group of people fron Utah, banned together, pledged to make 20+ wells for water supply (very necessitate) to the rural area? You can do that too.
Peace.

Hello,
To the earlier one who said not many Khmer have mental health problems and referred mental illness to CRAZY. This notion told me that you have A VERY LONG WAY to learn about mental illness. It does not translate literally CRAZY. Mental illness refers to emotional state that keep you from your regular daily activity, sometimes in a prolong period of time. If I am depressed, I can't work because of my depression, "I have a mental illness," but definitely, I am not crazy. I hope you learn something today.
Your fellow Cambodian!!!
Peace.

For those that are so-called "educated or intellectual", please be humble of your accomplisment. I hear it too often that parents who has a son or daughter in college of university studying to be whatever are talking so much crabs and expressing their proud too much.
