Extra Funding Sought for New NA Building

THE CAMBODIA DAILY

CPP lawmaker Cheam Yeap said Monday that he is seeking to add $7.5 million to the National Assembly budget for 2007 to cover the costs of furnishing and staffing the new and considerably larger parliament building.

Cheam Yeap said he will request the money from the Ministry of Finance, on top of the $15 million amount budgeted for the current Assembly for 2006.

"The new building is gigantic in size if I compare it to the old one," Cheam Yeap said.

"A large variety of new equipment is necessary to create a more comfortable and convenient workplace so everyone can work in the interests of the nation," he said.

"We cannot work under the shade of a tree. We need a building for history."

The new Assembly, located next to the towering Naga Corp Casino, is due for completion in June 2007. The old Assembly, which will be given to the Supreme Court, is currently located on Street 63.

Among other items, the new building requires five times more cleaners than the 30 cleaning staff currently servicing the current Assembly, Cheam Yeap added.

On top of that the new building also requires 50 times more electricity than the old Assembly, and will have more than 300 offices and meeting halls compared to the current 31.

Though there are currently only 122 lawmakers to occupy the 300 offices, Cheam Yeap said the additional rooms will be needed in the years to come.

Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Yim Sovann said the extra millions for the Assembly budget should be handled in a responsible manner.

"We have to examine what items in the budget are needed and what are not," he said.

The Assembry should not be allowed to expand its bloated numbers of staff any further, Yim Sovann said, adding that there are already 600 people on its payroll.
