The father of an East Sussex backpacker who disappeared in Cambodia in 2004 is to make another visit to the Far East to search for his son.

Mike Gibson, 59, said he remains determined to find out what happened to 21-year-old Eddie, from Hove.

Four officers from Sussex Police major crime branch have spent 10 days in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh helping with the missing person inquiry.

Corporate financier Mr Gibson thanked the detectives for the efforts.

Follow up inquiries

He said on Wednesday their expertise had added to the process of finding out what happened to Eddie.

"Unfortunately we haven't had a result but we know that Sussex Police with the Cambodian police will continue to follow up inquiries and hopefully lead on to an answer," he said.

Mr Gibson, who has already visited Cambodia to look for his son, said he intends to return in the first week of September.

Eddie was three weeks into a course at Leeds University when he decided to leave and travel in Asia.

He was last heard from when he e-mailed his mother on 24 October 2004.

His father said he hoped to find people who could reveal what became of him after that date.

"We are determined not to give up on this," he said.

"We want to know what happened to our son."

Ch Insp Graham Pratt said the Sussex officers interviewed some of the people Eddie was in contact with in Cambodia.

"We also visited some of the hotels and other establishments that he stayed at and travelled ourselves from Phnom Penh to Poipet, a border town with Thailand," he said.

"We were able to add some fact and provenance to what was already known from the Cambodian investigation.

"Unfortunately, it still remains the fact that Eddie's whereabouts after 24 October 2004, remain a mystery.

"We have come back with further inquiries that we need to work on and we will be making further suggestions on what work they should carry out in Cambodia."
