A 25-year-old Phnom Penh garment worker is demanding $1,000 compensation from a Chinese co-worker whom she has accused of sexual harassment after he kissed her on the cheek during work, police in Russei Keo district said Monday. Khat Darasy, Tuol Sangke commune police chief, said he had tried but failed Monday to mediate between Ngeth Sokyen, who filed a sexual harassment complaint with police on Saturday, and the 35-year-old Chinese man, of whose name he was not certain. "She sued the Chinese man for sexual harassment and demanded $1,000," Khat Darasy said of the two Zheng Yong garment factory employees. "The accused said he could afford to pay only $50," he said. "The woman said she had witness but the Chinese said he'd only kissed her hand," Khat Darasy said, adding that sexual harassment is a misdemeanor and that the Chinese man had already been fired from his job. Free Trade Union Deputy Secretary-General Sam Srey Mom said that the union had lodged the grievance on the worker's behalf, as the incident had caused Ngeth Sokyen marital problems. "She is ashamed in front of the whole factory," she added. Heng Tech, Zheng Yong administration chief, said that no one had been fired yet.
