The Cambodian prime minister said that corruption occurs in the ministry of public works, in the department issuing license plates for cars and motorcycles. He indicated that this corruption causes a lot of hardship on the people.

Prime minister Hun Sen revealed the corruption in a speech given at the closure of the seminar on the situation of the order and security for tourism and the strategy to reduce land traffic accidents organized by the Interior ministry on 30 June.

The prime minister said: “Even the department issuing license plates for cars and motorcycles is quite corrupt. To tell you the truth, they [the people] are tired [of corruption], and they buy used motorcycles to use because it is difficult to get a [new] license plate so they rather not [get the license plate]. For a used car that cost $3,000, it is very difficult to get a license plate, so they [the people] rather not have a license plate altogether because [if they do] they would have to pay more [bribe]. This is the problem, it is not because people do not want to have license plate as required by the law, but we [the government] are creating difficulty for them. It is not right to blame the people [who do not obtain license plates], we should blame the public service to be correct. We should state it truthfully in order to move the governing operation to fight against corruption and all inactions which cause difficulties to people.”

During yesterday’s speech, the leader of the government did not elaborate on punitions that would be imposed on those who are corrupt. However, the prime minister said that, in order to prevent anarchy from happening, he personally ordered the issuing of license plates to all vehicles to be done in each province and cities, and the vehicle owners no longer have to come to Phnom Penh to obtain a license plate anymore.
