King-Father's Pet Subject: Abdication Wishes and Real Abdications

Unofficial English translation by M. Preuk

History
My Pet Subject: Abdication Wishes and Real Abdications
By N. Sihanouk
Phnom Penh, June 25, 2006

1- 1941: Marshall Pétain’s France chose me as King of Cambodia. I cried my eyes out.

My Parents begged me not to refuse the Throne. My Father told me: it is the last chance for the elder NORODOM Branch to be rehabilitated by re-occupying the Throne of Cambodia.

I obeyed my parents while crying.

2- A few years later, I find it unbearable the fact that the ex-Khmer Empire became a colony of France. I told my Parents that I wanted to transfer the Throne to my Uncle, Prince Sisowath Monireth.

My Parents informed this to the latter, he did not promise to grant me, each month, a pension enabling me to lead a decent life.

My Parents asked him if, when becoming King in my stead, he (Monireth) would grant me such a pension. My Uncle answered them: “Let my Nephew give me the Throne first! I will see what I will do for him.”

My Parents told me: “With Monireth as King, your future is uncertain. You should not abdicate.”

3- 1955: In full glory, following the total success of the Royal Crusade for the complete Independence of Cambodia, I decided to abdicate in order to establish the Sangkum Reastr Niyum which would be submitted to the vote by our People. Since 1941, I never felt comfortable in the King statute.

4- 1960: Death of my august Father, H.M King Norodom Suramarit.

The National Assembly wanted to make me … King of Cambodia again one more time. However, in front of my refusal, our Parliament, through a modification of our Constitution, made me “Head of State of Cambodia.”

H.M. the Queen, my august Mother, became the Symbol of the Monarchy and the Monarchic continuity.

[As] Head of State, I did not receive the wishes and salutations of the State bodies representatives and the Diplomatic Corps. With the State bodies representatives, I was forced to present my deepest respects and wishes to H.M. Queen Preah Sisowath Kossamak. That was in total compliance with my wish.

5- 1993: General Legislative Elections in Cambodia, under international control (UNTAC -> United Nations Transitional Authority of Cambodia).

I wanted to participate in these Elections in order to allow our Sovereign People to judge me, through its votes, after the very serious accusations and condemnations of Lon Nol, Sirik Matak, Sim Var, and their (1970) Putsch accomplices.

The Political Parties greatly feared my Victory to the 1993 Elections.

The most important of these Parties preferred giving me back the Royal Crown (without Power).

The CPP, the Funcinpec, and the NFLPK (Samdech Son Sann), newly elected by the Sovereign People, solemnly condemned the March 18, 1970 Putsch and conferred to me and the S.R.N., a total rehabilitation. Furthermore, they restored the (constitutional) Monarchy. Without being a candidate to the Throne, I was elected by the Parliament (unanimously except for one or two votes, I do not recall anymore) as constitutional King of (the 2nd Kingdom of) Cambodia. I accepted this “new nomination,” because I have the sacred duty of returning the Throne which was lost in 1970, to my August Ancestors.

6- A few years after my re-accession to the Throne, I asked His Holiness Samdech Tep Vong, the very venerated and beloved Supreme Chief of the Venerated Buddhist Monks of our Kingdom, his very high permission to abdicate and to make the Council of the Throne elect a King much younger than me.

His very venerated and beloved Holiness Samdech Tep Vong begged me not to abdicate. I obeyed Him.

7- 2004: H.E. Sam Rainsy, SRP leader, let me know in writing that anti-Sihanouk (people) are preparing a demonstration against me: I decided to abdicate immediately. But, thinking of His very venerated and beloved Holiness Tep Vong, I did not “abdicate,” but I “took my retirement,” this allowed me not to disobey His Holiness (who was against my abdication).

It appears thus that one of my “pet subjects” is to abdicate.

His majesty's heart was never there to be King.

He tried by taking the advise of his august father. At fault,it seemed to point toward Prince Sisowath Moniret. He was slow to act. He was somewhat unprepared. I did not think that he was bright or trustworthy either.

H.M King Sihanouk was a very young man at that time and without his solid and gold promise from his uncle, he decided to change his Majesty mind. Therefore altered the fate of Cambodia into the hand of an inexperience and a very young and an unsure prince.

This could have been prevented,if our monarchy perhaps had the right advisers, solid supporters and the royal family was together from the very start of King Sihanouk's reign at least. One family who would know exactly how the royal family should carry out its leadership and behavior.
It looks more to me, the royal family like any of us ordinary family was not together, disorganized and having very little plan for the future. The royal family also did not have strong defenders. Look! who in charge of the royal police today?
Where is your real power of the sword your majesty? and the power of mirror? ( we agree to tone down the the power of money. Even thought it's extremely imprtance).

At the time of Sihanouk in charge of Cambodia or in the 60's, the super powers era of China, USSR and The US did not help either.

The royal family needs fine plan and an extraordianry advisors.
As of today, would the royal family employ or hire those who know what is going on around the world and not just in China or North Korea? and perhaps one who can help open up the eyes of the two evils country a little bit more may be? That might be a big big help to us! and the rest of the world!.
Her Majesty Queen Victoria was only 18 years old when she took the throne of England and so did Prince Sihanouk.
It's amazing!, how the two turn out
to be.
King Sihanouk is a true survivor. I would say. He navagated his own life and the throne of Cambodia more/less, but that is not enough. I like to know of today also, if the royal family know that their family is still being disorganized? still helpless? what would happen to the rest of the royal family when his Majesty The King father is gone? Is our current King planing to marry any time soon? or is producing an heir to the throne having any meaning at all? if he decides to marry : to whom? Is our own khmer's woman good enough to take the hand of our current King Sihanomy? or deos he needs another mix descent-wife? if he decides to stay single which I don't see why not? who should Cambodain people trust to be his first ( King Sihamony's ) runner up? Wake up your Highnesses!!!

We are ordinary Khmers poeple, but truely care of our very own identity, existence and future. Your Majesty's family happened to be our true blood. Please share and becareful with what you do or don't you think this issue is not important enough for us to know?.

We have learned a lot from Prince Moniret and like to see a very different or a complete makeover and a very bright khmers'future.
