Opposition leader expressed his doubt on Ta Mok’s death - Khieu Kanharith changes his tune

Following earlier Ta Mok lawyer's complaint on the worsening of Ta Mok's condition, Khieu Kanharith summarily dismissed the situation claiming that Ta Mok was merely faking his condition. Today, Khieu Kanharith is changing his tune. He now claims that the Hun Sen regime did all it can to provide for Ta Mok's health, however in a twist of irony, Khieu Kanharith also claims that the care for Ta Mok is useless anyway. (Photo: RFA)

Following the death of Ta Mok, Mr. Sam Rainsy, the opposition party leader, had expressed his immense regret on the lost of an important witness who will be answering on the killing of almost 2 million Cambodian people during the Khmer Rouge regime.

Mr. Sam Rainsy said: “I regret that the government did not pay enough attention, it did not let foreign doctors, witnesses help look after the health of Ta Mok so that he can provide information to the Khmer Rouge Tribunal (KRT). I doubt that this event is unintentional, it is not entirely unintentional, the KRT barely started functioning and Ta Mok immediately died. This means that some people have interest in seeing to the death of Ta Mok, in order to silence him forever, so that no one know the truth because some are afraid of the truth. If the truth is exposed, these people will be involved in these huge killings, in the genocide, in the criminal act against humanity, it would be a heavy burden on them.”

He also voiced his doubt on the death of Ta Mok: “I am asking for the investigation and the finding of the cause of Ta Mok’s death. They should perform an autopsy, look at Ta Mok’s blood, his body. What was the cause of Ta Mok’s death, was it really natural of was it because they want to see him dead.”

Reaction from the government spokesman

Khieu Kanharith, the government spokesman and minister of information had reacted to the doubt which lingers on the cause of Ta Mok’s death. He said that the government did what it could already.

Khieu Kanharith said: “We regret the death of Pol Pot more than this. Those who accused the government of not paying attention in the care, do not understand medical care, they only accuse. We use all our means already, that’s why the doctors did not allow him to be moved, because his health was so weak already … furthermore, there is useless to do it. Some are playing the role of doctors, of police officers, of tribunal.”
