Retired King Norodom Sihanouk on Friday asked that Funcinpec and the future political party of Prince Sisowath Thomico both refrain from describing themselves as Sihanoukist.
Prince Thomico last month announced his intention to form a new coalition political party, which he said would challenge Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling CPP and advance Sihanoukist ideology.
"I am asking HRH Prince Sisowath Thomico, the party that this Prince will found, Funcinpec and others not to use, no longer to use, never to use in their writings or propaganda statements 'Sihanoukism,' 'Sihanoukist ideology,' 'the ideals of Sihanouk,'" the retired King wrote in a statement.
Norodom Silianouk announced on Thursday that he was not behind the new party and he claimed that police were investigating the matter. In a June 22 statement titled "Funny Story," Norodom Silianouk said he had convinced Prince Thomico not to oppose the CPP, as this was a "bad idea." Prince Thomico declined to comment on the retired King's statements on Sunday but said that he would continue in his plans to form a party.
"Indeed, if I am not allowed to call them Sihanoukist ideals, I will call them ideals that are not allowed to speak their name," the prince said.
The party would not now oppose the CPP, he added.
Funcinpec spokesman Nouv Sovathero declined to comment.
Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak said last week that Cambodian police were not tasked with investigating the activities of political parties.
