Deprived of former Khmer Rouge military commander Ta Mok, who was potentially a key witness and defendant, the Khmer Rouge tribunal is now "ridiculous" and may succeed in trying no one, retired King Norodom Sihanouk said Wednesday. In a correspondence posted on his Web site, Norodom Sihanouk wrote that following Ta Mok's death on Friday, the incarcerated former Tuol Sleng commander Comrade Duch is now the only remaining defendant who can be prosecuted. "[T]his now ridiculous Khmero-foreign TRIBUNAL [is] charged with trying, in four years, the (now) only Khmer Rouge, 'DUCH,' presuming he will not disappear one way or another," he wrote.
