World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz on Thursday welcomed the release of an internal World Bank report sharply critical of the Bank's forestry program in Cambodia. "Improving the management of forests, land and other natural resources is essential for the wellbeing of the Cambodian people and its economy," Wolfowitz said in a statement. The Bank said that, in the future, it will take the needs of local communities into greater consideration following an internal Inspection Panel report sharply critical of the multimillion-dollar, Bank-funded Forest Concession Management and Control Pilot Project in Cambodia. The World Bank project failed to take into account the needs of villagers and local ecosystems while working with logging companies operating in Cambodia, the report said. "We recognize that we have to work harder to build consensus with donors, civil society and government on a range of reforms to ensure community access to forests, land and other natural resources," the Bank's Country Director Ian Porter said on Friday.
