A German man accused of sexually abusing young girls jumped from his one-storey apartment in Phom Penh and injured himself in a failed bid to escape arrest, a Cambodian police official said today.

Karl Heinz Henning, 61, accused of sex offences involving underaged girls, was hospitalised, said Keo Thea, a municipal anti-trafficking police officer.

He said police watched Henning bring young girls to his apartment for some time before arresting him yesterday.

They found four ethnic Vietnamese girls aged 10 to 13 in the apartment and confiscated 18 pornographic video cassettes and bondage material during the raid.

Keo Thea said that as police were searching the apartment, Henning managed to escape and jumped four metres off the balcony, crashing into a metal abutment used for gardening.

A number of foreigners have been arrested and charged with debauchery, a broad legal term in Cambodia covering sexual misconduct which carries a minimum jail term of 15 years.
