Cambodian cow "dung" banned in Prime Minister Nguyen Tan "Dung's" Vietnam

Vietnam province bans Cambodian cattle, manure: paper
Wed Aug 23, 2006

HANOI (Reuters) - A province in southern Vietnam has banned the import of cows, buffaloes and their manure from neighboring Cambodia to help stop the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, state media reported on Wednesday.

The Long An provincial government also banned transportation of cattle from the border district of Duc Hue, 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Ho Chi Minh City, after people sold fertilizer made from Cambodian cow dung to rubber plantations, the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper said.

Many cattle imported from Cambodia into the Mekong delta-based province have been found to be infected with foot-and-mouth disease which has spread to the local cattle, the paper said.

Provincial officials could not be reached for comment.

Vietnam's Animal Health Department lists Long An as one of the 13 provinces still suffering from the highly contagious disease, which spreads among cattle and pigs but is not communicable to humans, since it re-surfaced in April.
