SINGAPORE : 48 students from the Southeast Asian region have just become Singapore Scholars.

They will be doing their undergraduate studies under the Singapore Cooperation Programme, which was set up to bring the ASEAN member-states closer and boost understanding among the younger generation.

The Singapore Scholarship aims to help foster a sense of identity among the 10 ASEAN members.

It also seeks to encourage learning from one another.

18 year-old Thai Natapa Phruthisaranphong is one of the 48 recipients this year, and will be studying Business Management at the Singapore Management University.

She is no newcomer to Singapore, having visited the country twice before on holiday.

She said, "It's (a) safe and good place, my parents are not very worried about me even if I come home late. In Singapore, it's a mix of Asian cultures and so it feels more like home in Singapore, than being in Europe or America."

19 year-old Lay Seak Meng from Phnom Penh hopes to return to Cambodia and contribute to his home country as a civil servant in the future.

He will be doing Business Administration at the National University of Singapore.

He said, "I can tell other ASEAN scholars about my country...and others, I can listen to them as they tell about their countries. It is nice as we can grow our friendship among member countries....Singapore is also a cosmopolitan country...many nationalities here, so what a good place to improve my communication and leadership skills."

400 scholarships have been awarded to young men and women from the other 9 ASEAN countries since the initiative kicked off eight years ago. - CNA/ms

Our concern is that the Cambodian government, Hun Sen, cannot provide job to our graduates. There are hundred of students who are graduated from colleges and universities in Cambodia and out side of Cambodia every year, however, these graduated students are experiencing jobless. There are only a few who get the job because their official connection or affiliation with the influence people. Even scarier, this year, there is 20% rate of unemployement, and this is only the urban living alone. The supply of education doesn't meet the job demanded.

Most jobs can be created from private funding.

Think of AN INSURANCE COMPANY. It alone WILL INVOLVE police men and women, private or state detectors, bankers, secretary, laywers, and phone operators and not to mention fired trucks, fire fighters, ambulances , nurses AND doctors WHEN OR IF the person WILL injure or the institution WILL DESTROY BY FIRE FOR EXAMPLE.

What was his name of a man that lost $30,000 to rubbery or burglary in Battambang not too long ago? That $30,000 could have been spent toward a good cause, pure and simple Khmers'jobs!

DID WE FORGET THAT THOSE THOSE JOBS WILL RISE FROM KHMERS' SCHOOLS? OR OUR TALENTED KIDS?

Please don't count on the GOVERNMENT too much. We know they weren't all that and majority are crooks. We must learn to count on ourself.

What we can do, is lobbying or talking to the policians and laws makers or Ma Phom, Ma Srok OR Lok Khet thAT WE WILL VOTE FOR IN THE NEAR FUTURE. lET THEM KNOW THAT WE WILL VOTE FOR THEM, IF THEY WILL DO THE JOB OF MAKING IT HAPPENS! KEEP PUSHING THE ISSUE AND SPREAD THE WORDS. GOOD LUCK MY BELOVED CAMBODIAN PEOPLE!

We need to change our society from a job starving SOCIETY or a job plentiful society !

This proves Cambodian brain is just as good as others. All it needs is a bit of nuturing.

Brains, not guns, can be used to defense the country. Therefore, budget for the armed forces that they use to kill and evict their own people ought to be diverted to education.

All these so called Cambodian intellectual are to train to be a worker! Just watch! I will give another 10years and Cambodia will experience BRAIN DRAIN! No fucken job and the pay are dirt cheap and might as well get the fuck out of Cambodia for a better life abroad!

It took almost 30years to grow a person educationally to become fully knowlegeable in his or her field of study! If I were to compare to a tree that is growing for 30years and it would bear abundance fruits to eat! But for Cambodia that had been growing their intellectual will bear nothing!

I just wish that these Cambodian intellectuals would create their own job and be their own boss instead of going to other country!

10:51am,

I see you're frustrated. But, don't you know, our society is more like Indian's society -- a Cast System. The poor & meak doesn't have much chance to go to school. The gov't don't give a F..K about the citizens.

If one has the opportunity to study abroad, you be assure that person can have great education and gain the REAL knowledge. In Cambodia where everyone plagerize and bribery to earn a degree or getting significant GPA. All we can hope that person, when he/she goes back to Cambodia will do good deeds for the society.

Hun Sen had never attended formal school and he received three PhD.

One PhD from Southern California,US, another one from Malaysia, and the most recent one he received was from South Korea.

He would smoke any Khmer who dare chooses to stand in his way except Ah Yuon!

if the students from Cambodia are khmer descendant, i believe they will come back to help Cambodia, but if they are from the ethnic descendant, i don't think they will come back b/c they hated the yuon slave governments, and as i can see most educators ran out of Cambodia b/c they can't fit, so they left for their future and the future of their children.
