Five important officials belonging to the royalist Funcinpec party at the provincial level from Battambang had joint the CPP in the morning of Saturday 26 August.
This is the second time that officials from the royalist Funcinpec party in the northwestern provinces left the party to join the CPP since the 2003 legislative election. The first defection occurred on 22 July 2006 when 8 Funcinpec officials left to join the CPP also.
The low key welcoming of the Funcinpec defectors took place at the CPP office in Battambang.
An anonymous CPP official from Battambang revealed that the welcoming was performed for 5 Funcinpec provincial and district level officials. Among the defectors are: Chhoam Bun Khân, the deputy provincial governor of Battambang, Sou Arafat, the former deputy provincial governor of Battambang, Ket Kheng Ly, the district governor of Ratanak Mondol, Tauch Sinla, the district governor of Banân, and Ung Yuk Khun whose title was not revealed.
