An opposition Sam Rainsy party (SRP) offical says he is not happy about the fact that Khmer Rouge Tribunal foreign jurists are leaving Cambodia, and have not performed their tasks.
SRP lawmaker Keo Remy says he speculates that these jurists might want to delay the trial process, so that the former Khmer Rouge leaders would die before the trial begins, resulting in millions of dollars from the U.S., and the U.N. for this tribunal going to waste.
Keo Remy told VOA Tuesday that he has received news that for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Cambodia Court foreign investigation judgeshave gone on a vacation for a long time.
Keo Remy says that those judges have been sworn in and have the right to resume work. He says that those who have the right to issue a detention warrant are not present, and this absence stalls the trial procedure.
The U.N. and the Cambodian government formed a tribunal for the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders, with a budget of 56 millions dollars.
Tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath told VOA that the French investigating judge has been out of Cambodia for a long time and that he will be back in Cambodia next month.
Yu Bun Leng, the Cambodian co-investigating judge, refused to comment by saying that he was busy. Thong Ol, the alternate investigating judge, said he did not know about the issue.
