PM Thaksin off to Cambodia

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatara departed Thursday for neighbouring Cambodia to discuss border disputes and oversee the signing of a 34 million dollar loan to improve Thai access to Cambodia's main tourist attractions.

Thaksin is scheduled to meet with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and also receive an audience with King Norodom Sihamoni during the one-day visit, which coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two neighbours.

While in Phnom Penh, the caretaker premier will witness the signing of a 1.3 billion baht (34 million dollar) loan by the state-owned Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM) to the Cambodian government for improvements to Route 67.

The highway links northeastern Thailand to Siem Reap, which boasts Cambodia's main tourist attractions of Angkor Wat and Tonle Sap Lake.

The two leaders will also discuss ongoing disputes over their maritime and land borders, Thai foreign ministry sources said.

Talks over revenues from joint offshore oil reserves was also expected to be raised, according to sources in Phnom Penh.

Speculation that talks over oil and gas will take precedence was fuelled by reports in local Khmer-language media Wednesday that Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Secretary-General of the National Oil Authority Te Duong Dara had just returned from discussions on the topic in Bangkok and Dara had indicated that the issue was not yet resolved.

The two neighbouring nations are disputing what ratio each should be awarded from the so-called Joint Development Area which lies between them in the Gulf of Thailand.

Cambodia has demanded a far greater share of lucrative potential oil and gas reserves than Thailand has so far been willing to concede.

I never really like that nomplaiy-aye face man. He needs to worry about the election in thailand in october.
Go back to your country. We know that you are a corrupted and a dishonest man. Your people hated your gut.
It's pretty annoying to see a looser like him coming to our land. Don't expect anything. We don't give!
