A South Korean company named "Plus Wedding" is seeking Cambodian women who want to marry South Korean men and settle in Korea, the firm announced in advertisements this week in a Khmer-language newspaper.

The firm is the second to emerge in recent months offering to help Cambodian women find partners, and like its predecessor, Couple Service, government officials have already greeted it with hostility.

"If Miss and Madam intend to seek life partners who are Koreans and want to live there, we would like to inform them that our company has partners in South Korea who are male Koreans and want to find life partners," the advertisement stated in Rasmei Kampuchea Daily Tuesday and Wednesday. "If any Miss and Madam wants to open opportunities for themselves, hurry up," the advertisement advises, pledging that the women will find "real men."

A Cambodian member of staff at the firm on Street 456 in Chamkar Mon district said the company is licensed by the South Korean government but has no official endorsement in Cambodia.

The firm has already found 100 women who want to participate since its launch earlier this month. None of the women have been introduced to partners yet and none have left the country, said the staffer, who refused to give her name. "In South Korea, there is a shortage of women. Men make up 57 percent while women make up 43 percent [of the population]," she explained.

Cambodians do not need to pay to sign up, though the South Korean men do, she added. "In my personal opinion, Khmer women do not really love [the men], but they want to live abroad," she said. "In our country it is difficult to find work."

Company and South Korean government officials will ensure that no Cambodian women enter the sex trade once they have left the country, she added.

Mom Soth, director of the municipal department of culture, warned that the enterprise could be used to traffic women, and that it contravenes Cambodian tradition.

"Normally, when people are living in poverty, when they hear about something they just want it. But when they arrive [abroad], it could be quite different—we don't know," he added.
