Thursday August 31, 2006

(Kyodo) - Child survival rates and child healthcare in Cambodia have significantly improved in the last five years, according to a government report released Thursday.

The report was based on a survey conducted jointly by the National Institute of Public Health and the National Institute of Statistics from early September 2005 to early March 2006.

"The infant mortality rate dropped from 95 to 65 deaths per 1,000 births, and the under-5 mortality rate is now 83 per 1,000 live births compared with 124 in 2000," the report said.

Improvements were also seen in the nutritional status of young children. The percentage of young children too short for their age declined from 45 percent to 37 percent, and those too thin for their height declined from 15 percent to 7 percent, according to the report.

The report said 60 percent of children less than 6 months old were exclusively breastfed in 2005 compared with 10 percent in 2000, and household consumption of iodized salt increased from 15 percent in 2000 to 73 percent in 2005.
