A preservation team was set to begin work in the cooler, dry months around December. But strong winds and heavy rain that hit parts of Kompong Thom province Monday caused the brick tower at Sambor Prei Kuk Cambodia's most important pre-Angkorian site, to collapse, said Chuch Phoeurn, an archeologist and secretary of state for the Ministry of Culture. The tower is located east of the main tower at the site, which King Bhavavarman I made his capital toward the end of the sixth century. The tower being especially vulnerable, Chuch Phoeurn had planned to protect it, using special funds provided by the Cambodian government for monument preservation each year. Now that the top of the tower has collapsed on the interior chapel, debris will have to be cleared before it is decided whether the tower can be restored, he said. The ministry is working with Wadesa University in Japan to preserve Sambor Prei Kuk and make it a tourist destination.

Angkor Wat may face a similar fate unless the sewerage system in Siem Reap City is fixed in time.
