"I had anticipated that [Prince Ranariddh]
could not stay a long time in the country.
He must run away."
—Lu Laysreng,
Funcinpec Minister of Rural Development

Funcinpec President Prince Norodom Ranariddh has left the country to develop relations with friendly political parties in the region and has set no date for his return, the prince's spokesman said Monday.

Prince Ranariddh left the country with neither warning nor fanfare Friday, little more than a week after he returned to Cambodia for the first time in five months.

"The Prince left to build relationships with other friendly political parties and [to work on] foreign affairs in the region," Chea Chanboribo said. The departure is not connected to problems in Prince Ranariddh's private life, Chea Chanboribo added.

The prince's public affairs adviser Ok Socheat revealed Sunday that Prince Ranariddh and his wife of nearly four decades, Princess Marie, have begun divorce proceedings. The pair remain on good terms and may be able to smooth out their differences and salvage their marriage, he said.

Funcinpec Minister of Rural Development Lu Laysreng said Sunday that he had not expected the prince to stay long in Cambodia He also said that the prince did not discuss his departure with party officials.

"I had anticipated that he could not stay a long time in the country. He must run away," Lu Laysreng remarked.

Nhiek Bun Chhay, secretary-general of the strife-prone royalist party, also said he had not been notified prior to the prince's exit.

Adding to Funcinpec's woes Monday was news that six senior party officials in Battambang have defected to the ruling CPP. The six, who jumped ship last week, include a deputy provincial governor, a former deputy provincial governor and four district governors and deputy governors.

Striking an optimistic tone, Nhiek Bun Chhay said the defections would not harm Funcinpec.

"We have no concerns. It is just simple, it will not weaken the party," he said.

Battambang Deputy Provincial Governor Chhom Bun Khan said he defected because he was disenchanted with the royalists.

"I lost confidence with the Funcinpec party," he said. He added that Funcinpec should have promoted him to a better position, given that he had served the party for 26 years.

"The Funcinpec party has no clear principle. They forgot my hard work. The party is nepotistic," he said.

Chhom Bun Khan also said that he was spurred to join the CPP by a speech by Prime Minster Hun Sen, in which he said that CPP deputy governors will be allowed to function as Independent civil servants and will keep their positions as long as they are qualified.

At least one Funcinpec official in Phnom Penh also appears to have felt uncertain about his work with the government.

Sok San, formerly a Funcinpec secretary of state at the Ministry of Labor, quit his job several weeks ago, CPP Secretary of State Othsman Hassan said.

Othsman Hassan said Sok San told him he handed in his notice because he wanted to work for a Thai investment company instead.

"It is not related to politics," Othsman Hassan said, adding that Sok San remains a Funcinpec member. Sok San could not be reached for comment.

Government spokesman and Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said the CPP has accepted the six officials from Battambang, and compared the CPP and Funcinpec to two pockets in a pair of trousers.

"They just ran from one pocket to another," he said. "If we don't allow them to defect to the CPP they will run to other parties."

Meng Rita, Sam Rainsy Party acting secretary-general, claimed that several thousand grassroots Funcinpec members have defected to the SRP in recent months. More senior Funcinpec officials are now bailing out because they don't want to lose their government positions, he said.

Hang Puthea, director of the Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free Elections in Cambodia, said Funcinpec members are losing faith in the party because of its top-level internal divisions.

He also claimed that the CPP is trying to dismantle Funcinpec.

"The CPP's strategy will allow the new government to be a one party government," he said.

Each time I hear or read about this scum prince and his clan, it is more than embarrasing and disgracing to the country. What makes it sounds and looks worse is people around him trying to defend, cover-up, lie for him. They all have not any brains to tell wright from wrong. There are two things that they are good at: 1) louk kondouy and 2) kut sketd.

Ordinary Funcipec members join CPP for survival and job. They will join any party that they can get help to put food on the table/shelter for their families. High ranking of Funcipec defect to CPP because they want to be rich/powerful. This type of people CPP know their inside core. so they are ranked by years of services under CPP labor Union laws.

Sihanouk from time to time has ordered his sons, especially,Ranarith to fully cooperate with Hun Sen and to do whatever Hun Sen does to please his master, Hanoi. But Ranarith has once again refused to take order from his father, Sihanouk.

Ranarith definitely knows his father's political motivation and dirty political manauver against Khmer and Cambodia, which in his political views would devastate to Cambodia in the near future. And therefore, Ranarith chose to walk away once again.

In my political opinion, it would be best for Khmer, Cambodia, and especially, best for Sam Rainsy Party. It gives SRP the opportunity to work toward achieving goals, which is to win the election in 2008.

We're all hear every word from Sihanouk's mouth - he has nothing to say good thing about Khmer and our beloved country. Sihanouk is so desperate about holding on to his Royal Palace.

Your CD's and DVD movies are just a piece of shit! Go on until your day!

Thank

i think Rannaridh needs to come out strong and face reality. He cannot just keep running out of the problem times and again. Probably he has to go against his father too and stop kowtowing to Hun Sen....to me he has strengthes and weaknesses like everyone of us. foreget about Sihanouk, he is now Hun Sen's lackey. Once he said Hun Sen was a lackey of VN, and now he is even cheaper than Hun Sen...SH is so afraid of loosing luxury life before his death and be condemned for all the distaters he haas caused to the nation.
