Ally in Cambodia

Cambodia may have a poor human rights record that includes beating prisoners, but the Southeast Asian nation is a key U.S. ally in the war on Islamic terrorism.

U.S. Ambassador Joseph Mussomeli praised the government for its swift actions against suspected terrorists since the September 11 attacks. The arrests included a Cambodian and two Thai Muslims sentenced to life in prison in 2004.

"Over the past five years, Cambodia has made great strides in securing its borders and rooting out terrorists that seek to use this country as a base of operations," the ambassador said Friday. "We are honored to count Cambodia as a steadfast ally in this struggle."

The U.S. State Department's latest human rights report faults Cambodia for a "worsening" record on civil liberties.
