PATTAYA, Thailand, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Athletes from cash-strapped Cambodia will have to endure a 10-hour bus journey to reach next year's Southeast Asian Games in Thailand while team officials will fly to the event.
The team bus will have to negotiate the country's notorious pothole-ridden roads to reach the host city of Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand, a measure aimed at saving money on air tickets, a Cambodian Olympic Committee member told Reuters on Friday.
Prime Minister Hun Sen accused members of the country's Olympic committee on Tuesday of being freeloaders and has vowed to divert funds raised for the sports body to the Red Cross.
"We will send our team by bus, it will save us money," Meas Sarin said during a meeting of SEA Games officials.
"It's only a 10-hour journey, it's not that far, but our officials will fly there."
Cambodia, which failed to win any gold medals at last year's SEA Games in Manila, has decided to skip its turn at hosting the event in 2011 to save enough money to hold a regional summit.
The country is one of Asia's poorest, with a third of its 14 million people living off less than $1 a day.

Quoted, "It's only a 10 hours journey. It isn't too far, but our official will fly there". That's great. Thank you. How do you all feel KHMERS athletics regarding your superiors comment? Do you think they too should get on bus with you too?
I think athletics should fly and officials should take bus, so athletics can save energy to compet for medail, and useless officials must take bus because they just seat and shit to watch the game only.
Cambodian athletics are being paid to be a looser! ahahah!
Arh Khmer never change attitude even Arh pol pot gave them a lesson. The rich treats the poor as a second class citizen. In Srok Khmer if you're rich and has power, your servants and your poor relatives or cousins will need to respect Arh Nak Mean. It's about time to teach Arh Nak Mean to know the human value. To do that we need to do revolution again and make them suffer again. They never learn from the past. No wonder Srok Khmer becomes smaller and smaller because Arh Me Dourk Norm Khmer vear lnong (dump). But some Cambodian people said "Arh dump like Arh kvak he makes the country better and he can lead the country. those who said that because they're one of them (dump) too. Is only Arh Kvak know how to lead the country? Kiss my ass. I can do a better job than Arh Kvak. At least I can speak a broken English with American degrees like bachelor of science (boss shit), and master of science (more shit). I'm better shit than Arh Kvak. Arh Kvak depends on AK 47 and his killing. I'm depending on my brain and survival skill.
To 11:04AM
With great respect to your survival skill!
To Mr. Official, could u think that you should take bus with all the athletes to Thailand. You should always be there to encourage and support them. Hey u want to visit Thailand or u want cambodia athetes to bring some medal to camboida.
It's a real shame to see those officials still can release this information. Are they too silly to say this as their organisation has been publicly attacked? Maybe yes, because there are many dump officials holding important positions in Cambodia. Incredible Cambodia, with high school education, you can be a prime minister, no doubt about the fate of the country
Those officials must take bus too if they really wanna cheer our Cambodia teams and save more money. Presence of official in the bus makes our teams feel warm and cared. Unfortunately, the reality is damn..... and worse those officials will accompany many useless and ash-licker assistants.
i said fuck this shit... those official will crash on that airplane. they won't make it to the game.
