CPP-FUNCINPEC 'Verbal Jousting' Seen as Normal Between Cambodian Ruling Parties

The strong verbal jousting between the Cambodian People's Party [CPP] and FUNCINPEC [National United Front for an Independent, Neutral, Peaceful, and Cooperative Cambodia] Party, particularly between Hun Sen and Prince Ranariddh was regarded by most Cambodians as customary between the two power-greedy entities. After hurling bitter abuses at each other, they usually embrace and kiss each other's mouth, raising their champagne glasses to toast each other and sharing the cake of power in the most cordial and intimate manner. This is not the first time the two parties have behaved like that.

The current verbal broadside against each other this time is seen as a result of the preemptive attack by Prince Ranariddh of the FUNCINPEC Party, who has been badly stunned from the terrible blows dealt him by the CPP's Hun Sen. The prince grabbed the border markers' installation as an opportunity to voice his opposition from Kampot.

Hun Sen probably added that up to Prince Ranariddh's previous blow under the belt when the prince talked about his giving him, Hun Sen, a chance to share power during the first term. Later, Prince Ranariddh went to Kampong Chhnang where he vociferated blindly that he wanted all parties to unite and hand the power back to the King-Father. In response, Hun Sen told the government spokesman to riposte over the radio and TV stations on 15 September and then Hun Sen himself again thundered a rejoinder in his speech also from Kampong Chhnang yesterday.

The spokesman of the Hun Sen government loudly expressed regret at Prince Ranariddh's totally mistaken remark. He said this was because after the prince months-long vacation abroad, his return to the country not only caused complications inside his own family and FUNCINPEC Party but impaired the national society and messed up the government's work in trying to lead the country toward prosperity.

Moreover, the spokesman of the Hun Sen government drew Prince Ranariddh's attention by advising him that "in doing politics for a political party or leading a country you cannot do it on the basis of what you dreamt the previous night. Do not behave like King Sri Sugandhapat, who cooked up a plot to kill King Kan because of his dream 500 years ago."

Moreover, the spokesman of the Hun Sen government also opened Prince Ranariddh's eyes to the wisdom that in leading a political party or a country one should implement the constitution, the laws, the political platform, and specific plans of actions. He should not do it at the whims or under the instigation of miscreants or the so-called "historical president."

Concerning the planting of the border markers at the Bavet-Mok Bai international border gate, of which a ground-breaking ceremony was held on 7 September, probably it was because Va Kimhong did not invite Prince Ranariddh to attend that the latter was so furious.

However, the Hun Sen government explained that the border marker installation was a government responsibility, and a structure has already been set up with Va Kimhong as chairman of the commission for legislative and technical border affairs. Besides, Nhoek Bun-chhai and Yu Hokkri are also chairmen of the commission for inspecting and resolving border irregularities. This means that the composition of these commissions comes from both ruling parties.

Based on these reasons, the Hun Sen government reminded that Prince Ranariddh should know better; he should have a historical view when evaluating situations; he should have minutes of work and if he is not sure of something he should get a collective opinion rather than relying only on a handful of miscreants as he does now.

It is said that Prince Ranariddh now is a complete wreck. He has failed in his own private, family affairs. The Hun Sen government needs to intervene by giving him advice because it does not want his scandal to spill into the government work.

Nevertheless, Prince Ranariddh's FUNCINPEC Party is not totally hopeless. On 16 September, the office of the spokesman of this party issued a four-point clarification:
  1. Prince Ranariddh of the FUNCINPEC Party supports the Vietnam-Cambodia treaty complementary to the 1985 state border treaty, but the prince and FUNCINPEC do not take responsibility for the installation of the new border markers. Besides, the Vietnamese side has not yet recognized the maritime border along the Brevie Line, and Prince Ranariddh said what he said because his party is a partner in the government.
  2. Nhoek Bun-chhai replaces Yu Hokkri as chairman of the commission for border inspection and resolution, but this does not mean that Nhoek Bun-chhai and Yu Hokkri have taken part in or born responsibility for the installation of the border markers.
  3. In the past, Yu Hokkri inspected irregularities in the Cambodian-Vietnamese border regions before the National Assembly endorsed the law on the supplementary treaty; he did not inspect the installation of the border markers.
  4. The spokesman of the FUNCINPEC Party deeply regrets that the government spokesman mixed an issue very vital to the nation with an individual's personal problems and the problems inside the partner FUNCINPEC Party.
At the same time, Serei Kosal, special adviser to Prince Ranariddh, said, "We must be extremely careful. An inter-Cambodian problem, be it a big or a small one, can always be settled no matter how volatile it is."

Observers are not surprised by the verbal attacks against each other between the CPP and FUNCINPEC Party, for they know that these two power-greedy parties kiss each other three times a day while secretly stabbing each other in the back 10 times a day.

However, the people would like to make known beforehand that it is all right to have verbal jousting but not all right to throw stones at each other because the people do not want to see a bloody power struggle between the powers that be and the rulers again.

Since our Independance from France, no Khmer TYRANTS (SIHANOUSS, LON NOL, YUON XEN) could'nt stay for ever, because they are all damned.
YUON XEN will not make an exception to this rule. It will soon be time for him, his familyand his collaborators to pay for their crime and high treason.

Mr Sam Rainsy,

Have you recently heard the death threats against prince Thomico? Where are you? Why do you remain silent on it?

Maybe, for you, it's just a problem between YUON XEN and the Royal Family? and this doesn't concern you and your party at all, such as Heng Pov affair which your adviced your members not getting involved.

Maybe your main object is to preserve the coalition plan with CCP after the election 2008.

Hi Posted 1:05,
Let me tell you why Rainsy did not say anything.. He is a coward!!!
Didn't you follow Rainsy's activities? This power's hunger individual would do anything for Yuon Xen so that he can stay in the power seat (very delusional). Look at how strong he opposed Yuon Xen and when he was threated, he ran for his life and to come back with his head to the dust bottom of Yuon Xen feet, say anything (apologizing) to Yuon Xen to get the power back although in his heart he knows that Yuon Xen is the one behind the 1997's grenade attack.
Also, did you remember when Rainsy went to Canada and was secretly spoke with Yuon Xen men about Heng Pov's affaire? After the talk, Rainsy told his people to stop attacking Yuon Xen people and claimed that "It is Peal Si Peal" leave them alone.
Rainsy has a credible connection with L'Express editor (I am sure you know that by now.) Yuon Xen wants to meet with Rainsy in Paris to talk. Guess what? Yuon Xen would write a fat check to Rainsy and promise some fat government positions for the next election and Rainsy would take it.
Don't trust them. They are the TRIO (term use by Dr. Narinkiri Tith) of destroying Cambodia.

How do you draw a line between bad and good in Cambodian politic?

The good had become bad and the bad had become good among many Cambodian leaders! So far Mr. Sam Rainsy still stand out as Mr. Clean! The real verdict will be in 2008! I won't jump ship unless I see it with my own eyes!

ref 1:33AM.

Since you mentioned about so called Dr. Narinkiri Tith, got a chance to personally hear him speak at a private party over this Summer. He has full of hot air too. He has all the theories which everyone does (everyone is aware of the problem, but what is a best solution). But, when asked what could he do to help? None, whatsoever. He came for free food, after hearing him talk awhile, people stated to walk away.
