Some 45 villagers evicted from Sihanoukville's Prey Nop district rallied Tuesday morning outside Prime Minister Hun Sen's Phnom Penh residence to demand new land, but were dispersed by police and military police. The protesters, who represented 57 families, said they have filed a petition with Hun Sen's Cabinet asking for alternative land to live on. Protester Ly Na said the villagers took up residence on the empty 16-hectare plot in Ream commune six months ago, but had their homes bulldozed Sunday. Ream commune chief Chan Rith said the villagers' homes were destroyed because they had been built on land belonging to others.
