PHNOM PENH, Sept 14, 2006 (AFP) - A French national was fatally stabbed during a robbery in Cambodia's seaside resort town of Sihanoukville, police said Thursday.
Jean-Pierre Blouin, 63, was found floating in the surf off a popular beach Tuesday night with stab wounds to his neck and head, deputy police chief So Bunnoeun told AFP.
Police found the victim's passport, identity card and empty wallet nearby, he said.
"It is a case of robbery. But we don't know how much money was in the wallet," he said.
Blouin, who was based in Thailand, had entered Cambodia September 8 as a tourist.
A French embassy official in Phnom Penh confirmed that a French national had been killed and that the attack was under investigation.
Blouin is the third foreigner murdered in Cambodia since November last year, when a French hotel owner was hacked to death with a meat cleaver in his bedroom.
In February, a British bar owner was stabbed to death and his girlfriend badly slashed during a botched robbery attempt in their apartment.
A 15 year-old boy was sentenced last month to 20 years in prison for the Briton's murder.
While muggings are common in Cambodia, where a sense of lawlessness and a gun culture remain after decades of war that ended in 1998, serious attacks on foreigners have been rare.

Another very common crime in Cambodia is theft from men by prostitutes who have been admitted to hotel rooms
