Cambodian ex-police chief may seek asylum here 26 Sep 2006

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Cambodian police chief Heng Pov, who has been on the run since 2003, may seek asylum here.
He may do so to avoid extradition as there has been no word on an extension to his social visit visa which expires on Sunday.
A diplomat said this was among options open to the top cop convicted in absentia on Sept 18 to 18 years’ jail for complicity in the murder of municipal court judge Sok Setha Mony in 2003.
"The Oct 1 visa deadline is around the corner and he could be thinking of asylum here to avoid extradition," he said yesterday.
Two weeks earlier, the 50-year-old was arrested in Singapore for Immigration violation offences, and escorted to the Singapore-Malaysia border.
He had made his way to the island after he fled Cambodia in July.
Acknowledging that Heng Pov had entered Malaysia, authorities here also confirmed that their assistance had been sought in apprehending the fugitive.
Besides Heng Pov, five former police officers were also meted long jail sentences for their involvement in the killing of the judge.
Heng Pov is also alleged to have been involved in the attempted murder of a newspaper publisher, a prosecutor, an electricity authority official and the national military police chief.
Meanwhile, the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Bukit Petaling said it could not comment on applications for asylum.
"As a matter of policy, due to sensitivity and confidentiality surrounding such an application, the UNHCR office here does not issue statements on the status of applications.
"Neither is a confirmation or denial issued to queries over whether such applications were submitted."
