The secretary-general of the Funcinpec party had denied the claim made by Prince Norodom Ranariddh who said that the secretary-general wanted to nominate Princess Marie Norodom Ranariddh to be the party president. Nhiek Bun Chhay said the information is not true.
In an interview with RFA yesterday evening, General Nhiek Bun Chhay, in addition to the denial he made, also declared that he will not step down from his position as secretary-general of the party.
Nhiek Bun Chhay said: “This is not true, I already heard those who invented this story claiming that on 17 Sept, I went to meet Princess Marie with H.E. Sun Chanthol. In fact, this is not true at all … I am not stepping down I tell you, because we can see that if I step down, we don’t know how this party will fare.”
On Tuesday 26 Sept, Prince Ranariddh said that someone informed him that Nhiek Bun Chhay and the younger brother of Princess Marie had asked the princess to take over the presidency of Funcinpec and replace Prince Ranariddh. The princess refused the offer.
Prince Ranariddh asks Nhiek Bun Chhay to make arrangement with CPP
Even though Prince Ranariddh ordered a review of his party leaders to search for internal party saboteurs and kick them out of the party, he did not order Nhiek Bun Chhay to be kicked out of the party. However, he called Nhiek Bun Chhay and one party deputy secretary-general whom the prince did not name, to work to stop the removal of Funcinpec party members from their government positions.
Prince Ranariddh said: “I call on H.E. secretary-general Nhiek Bun Chhay and one of his deputy who have good relationship – I am talking about having a good relationship, I did not say that they sold themselves to others, I did not say any of that – with the CPP, in particular, good relationship with Prime Minister Hun Sen, to act as a messenger of Funcinpec, more importantly, to act as a messenger of the [Funcipec] party president who is asking the CPP and Prime Minister Hun Sen in particular, to stop the removal and shuffling [of Funcinpec party members in the government] from now on.”
