Prince Norodom Ranariddh, Funcinpec party president, admitted on Tuesday that within his party, there are indeed people who want to push him out of his position as president of the royalist party, and replace him with his wife, Princess Norodom Marie Ranariddh.

However, the prince said that Princess Marie declined the offer made by a group of Funcinpec officials.

The prince’s revelation came one day after a number of newspapers had published information about the internal rift within the Funcinpec party. The information claimed that it will not be long before the prince would be replaced by his wife, Princess Marie.

In an interview given to RFA following his meeting with party members in Pursat, the prince directly claimed that Nhiek Bun Chhay, Funcinpec party secretary-general, and the younger brother of Princess Marie, were the ones who asked Princess Marie to take the helm of the party. But, Princess Marie refused.

Prince Ranariddh said: “I did not know about it, but I heard that the princess refused, even though it was her own younger brother and General Nhiek Bun Chhay who went to meet her on 17 Sept evening.”

On Tuesday afternoon, RFA could not reach Nhiek Bun Chhay to obtain clarification. Nhiek Bun Chhay claimed that he was too busy.

On Monday, local news indicated that Prince Ranariddh was pressured to step down from the party presidency by a group of Funcinpec officials supporting Nhiek Bun Chhay.

However, the information was immediately denied by one Funcinpec official, he said that the rumor was fabricated by the Sam Rainsy Party.

Son Chhay, SRP MP, had immediately reacted to Funcinpec claim on Monday, saying that it is very unfair to accuse the SRP of starting the rumor. He stressed that the truth is the information came from within the Funcinpec party instead.
