KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- Singapore police have yet to hand over to Malaysian authorities former Cambodian police chief Heng Pov who is wanted in his homeland for crime, Immigration Department Enforcement Chief Datuk Ishak Mohamad said Sunday.
"There has yet to be any handing over (between the Singaporean and Malaysian authorities)," he told Bernama when contacted.
Ishak was asked to comment on a statement by a newspaper's SMS service which claimed that the ex-Cambodian police chief, wanted in his homeland for masterminding the assassination of a judge and other crimes, was being held in Malaysia awaiting deportation.
Speaking to the AFP news agency today, Cambodian Information Minister Khieu Kanharith confirmed the news and said that Heng Pov, who was previously under police custody in Singapore, had been sent to Malaysia.
However, Malaysian Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan, when contacted today, said he had no knowledge of the matter and declined comment.
On Thursday, Singapore police reportedly arrested Heng Pov, who entered Singapore on July 23, for overstaying after his visa expired on Aug 26.
He was accused of orchestrating the murder of Phnom Penh Municipal Court Judge Sok Setha Mony, who was shot in his car by two unidentified men on a motorcycle in April 2003.
Heng Pov was also alleged to have been involved in failed assassination attempts on a newspaper publisher, a prosecutor, an electricity authority official and the national military police chief, according to Cambodian government officials.
He was the Phnom Penh police chief until last year when he was promoted to be an adviser to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
He was also the Cambodian Interior Ministry's under secretary until late July when he was stripped of all his titles to enable legal action against him.
AFP had also reported that Heng Pov sought asylum in Australia after fleeing his country to escape the murder charges, but was refused.
