U.K. to provide Cambodia with 75M USD in aid in next 3 years

September 20, 2006

The United Kingdom would provide Cambodia with 75 million U.S. dollars in the next 3 years to support the fight against poverty and epidemic, said Mark Lowcock, visiting Director General of U.K.'s Department for International Development, here on Tuesday.

"The support will be focused on enhancing aid effectiveness, strengthening governance, improving the livelihood of poor people, bettering health services and tackling HIV/AIDS," said Lowcock in a written statement.

The aid was given in line with the principle of "good governance," which was at center of U.K.'s new action plan to fight world poverty, it said.

"Long-term progress in the fight against poverty will only be achieved through effective government and by people with the voice and confidence to hold their government to account," said Lowcock, who arrived here to launch his government's third White Paper on International Development.

The White Paper, entitled as "Eliminating world poverty: Making governance work for the poor," responded to four challenges: the importance of good governance in poor countries; the improvement of security, growth and public services to reduce poverty; the tackling of climate changes; and the reform of international system to build more effective and accountable states, said the statement.

Under the White Paper, the U.K. government would establish a Governance and Transparency Fund to support civil society, media, trade unions and communities to generate more demand for good governance, it added.
