Deputy PM stresses need to further develop Khmer areas

Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung on September 18 emphasised the need to construct, reform and develop the Khmer ethnic areas in a more comprehensive manner.
He attended a conference held in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on September 17-18 to review 15 years of implementing an instruction by the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee on issues involving Khmer ethnic minorities.
The Khmer-inhabited provinces, including Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, An Giang and Bac Lieu, should quickly develop specific plans of action based on the Party's and the Government's policies towards ethnic people, Deputy PM Hung said.
According to the Deputy PM, the Government would continue to invest around VND 2 trillion from its bond issuance programme in building irrigation and transport works and developing agriculture and aquaculture in the Khmer areas.
Around VND 10 billion would also be allocated to works at border provinces which were home to a large number of Khmer ethnic minorities, so as to ensure their political safety and turn the region into an economic hub of the country, he added.
The Deputy PM also said that more should be done to reduce poverty in the region, where the number of poor households remained relatively high, even up to 28-42% in some provinces.
During the conference, the Deputy PM also praised the role played by the association for solidarity of monks and nuns in socio-economic development and the conservation of cultural identity.
